After My Friend the Midwife’s 3 part series on “Normal Discomforts of Pregnancy” we want to give you our favorite things about being pregnant. After all, there is a ton that is a blast about pregnancy. You’re creating a life inside your body and that in itself is quite the miracle. It’s time to spoil yourself and allow others to spoil you! So here’s our list, and by all means, please add to it. WE LOVE FEEDBACK FROM THE WOMEN FOLLOWING US!! Plus, we bet there are probably over 100 wondrous things about pregnancy, these are just a start…
My Friend the Midwife’s 30 Favorite Things About Being Pregnant:
1.) Finding out you’re pregnant of course, whether it took you one month or one year there’s nothing better than seeing those two pink lines
2.) Seeing the look on your partner’s face when you tell him.
3.) Hearing baby’s heartbeat for the first time. Ahhh, the surge of joy felt when your midwife places the doppler on your belly and you hear those little gallops of your baby’s heart for the first time. I smile just thinking about it.
4.) Seeing your bump for the first time. There you are lying in your bed and there it is, that little bump of your belly. Things are happening in there!!
5.) Feeling your baby move for the first time. What was that? Gas? A butterfly? Nope, it’s your baby
6.) Telling friends and family that you’re expecting a baby!!
7.) Seeing the look on your parents face and when they find out.
8.) Hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the second time…
9.) Shopping for maternity clothes. You know you love to shop ladies, doesn’t matter what for. So go ahead and use this fabulous excuse to get yourself a new wardrobe.
10.) Picking out a baby name, so fun. Go ahead and look at all the lists on all the sites, ask your family and friends, run a survey, whatever, just have fun!!
11.) Hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the third time…
12.) The anatomy sonogram; whether you are finding out the sex of your baby or not, this scan is so much fun. Make sure you bring your spouse/partner if he can make it. This is the longest and most detailed of your sonograms and your baby is still small enough so you can see all of her or him.
13.) Registering for your baby shower!!!! Invite a your mom, sister, a friend to help you, it’s so much fun to start picking out all the wonderful things you want/need for your baby. Someone with experience to help you is a BIG help!
14.) Seeing your bump grow, your belly is getting gorgeous now.
15.) Feeling your baby move almost all the time.
16.) Hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the fourth time…
17.) Thinking about all the things your going to need for your baby and buying some of them even though you should wait. Like that oh so soft Gund bear…
18.) Talking relentlessly to your family and friends about your pregnancy and your birth. This may drive them a little crazy but it’s their job and processing is great for you! Besides you have or will do it for them
19.) Going to your baby shower. Surrounded by all the women in your life, great food and a lot of presents!
20.) Decorating the nursery and if you don’t have a nursery re-decorating your room.
21.) Hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the fifth time…
22.) Sitting or lying around with your partner and feeling the round smoothness of your belly and baby’s movements inside.
23.) Looking in the mirror at that big, gorgeous full-term belly. Go ahead and savor it, you’re beautiful!
24.) Fantasizing about your baby and what he or she is going to look like.
25.) Nesting! Everyday you’re organizing, cleaning, decorating for your baby. These are wonderful bursts of energy that are great for you physically and mentally.
26.) Hearing your baby’s heartbeat every time!!!
27.) Taking walks with your partner/spouse during early labor.
28.) Your first contraction…the first real contraction.
29.) The realization that you really are in labor this time.
30.) The birth of your baby


These are wonderful! Those firsts are truly incredible…when you hear the heartbeat and realize–holy cow–there is an actual PERSON in me that is doing something on its own–beating its own little heart. That’s not my heart beat–it’s the baby’s! Very exciting.
Also, letting people do nice things for you. Yes, people really are nicer to pregnant ladies. Whether it’s letting them bring groceries to your car, take-out food up the stairs to your apartment, or letting you sit on the subway–men and women both are usually nice to pregnant women.
